Filling Swayze’s Shoes.

How did you secure the role?

I auditioned same as anybody else. One audition led to another and I was eventually offered the role. At the time I was in Legally Blonde, and my agent contacted me about the part and I knew I’d enjoy doing it.

Are you a fan of the original film?

Yeah, absolutely. It’s funny, it’s one of those films you just know and are aware of from your childhood but can never remember actually watching.

Bruce Rubin, who wrote the original screenplay, is here with us every day, and it’s an amazing creative process of him being with us and changing scenes or adding details of the relationship between these two characters.

Dave Stewart is part of the music team, was it daunting working alongside such an icon?

It was exciting, it still is, and of course Glen Ballard is also involved, who wrote Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror. Both are hugely talented, and to come in and know you’re working with such people, its mind blowing.

With Ghost the Musical, it’s a brand new project with no template so it allows a level of freedom. Both Dave and Ballard would alter certain keys and words to improve the songs, it was always evolving.

How do you feel that the show is opening in Manchester at the Opera House rather than London?

I live in London now, and having the premiere in Manchester is good for me as I get to come home, but great for the city also.  Any chance to return, especially under such circumstances, is amazing.

Do you come back to Manchester often?

Not as often as I’d like. Obviously I still have family and friends here, mates from Coronation Street too, so it’s always nice to come back up North and see some familiar faces.

Where are your favourite night spots in the city?

A mate of mine owns a club in Deansgate, so whenever we’re all up and together we love heading over to the locks for the night. It’s a great night out, but Manchester always is.

Ghost the Musical opens on 28 March at the Manchester Opera House
